Why I take photos…

A friend of mine stumbled upon this blog, she’s always searching for photographers blogs and I’ve copied several of the links she’s found onto my blog roll. It’s nice to look at other people’s passion for photography. Of course they are all much better than I am but hopefully one day as I practice more it will seem to come that naturally to me as well.

This blog that my friend came across yesterday is a photographer out of Australia, she’s a mother, and loves taking pictures of her children. You don’t have to look at the blog that long to figure that out. If you have some time I would highly recommend starting back in 2006 when she started writing and read all of her post.

Not to give away her story but Sheye Rosemeyer had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls, and you can’t help but notice how many pictures she had of her middle daughter Ava. Gorgeous children with some of the most beautiful eyes, but in February of last year she lost her middle daughter Ava in a freak accident. It is kind of interesting to think about all the pictures she had of her and why she always seemed to be snapping pictures of her and not necessarily the other children. She talks about now looking back she wished she would have put her camera down a lot of the times and played with her rather than taking pictures but she also realizes what a precious gift it is to have all of those photos, every expression of her daughter captured in different photographs.

After reading her story I couldn’t help but think…this is why I take photos. I’ve not had anything such as tragic happen to me but just the simple fact of having still images of different parts of my life to look back on seems so great. Our wedding was a perfect example of that. We’ve sat down once to watch our wedding video but I find myself a lot of times going back through all the pictures we have and letting those images take me back to such a great time in our lives. Most of mine and Mark’s family joke that I’m going to go crazy taking pictures whenever Mark and I decide to have kids and I probably will, but reading Sheye Rosemeyer’s story just justifies that craziness even more to me. You never can tell what’s going to happen in life and to have all of those images to be reminded of things that occur in your life seems pretty priceless to me.

  1. I want you to know that I no longer care why you take photos. Why? Because nearly every day for one month I’ve come to your blog and have seen that title and have been disappointed that it is the same freaking title.

So, why do you take photos? I DON’T CARE. Why don’t you blog is a much better question to ask… and to write about……..

    I love you.

  2. I would have to agree with Melissa here. It has been a very long time since you have written anything. I also check back every once in a while to see if you have written anything new. I find myself coming less often b/c I just assume there won’t be anything new!
Have fun at the game on Sunday!

  3. I hope you are starting to feel the peer pressure!
